Ruzzola is a traditional throwing game from central Italy. Players wrap a cord around a wooden disc, around 13 centimetres across, and fling it so it rolls down a country road. In the bigger version, ruzzolone, the disc weighs several kilos, and in some villages it is a real wheel of aged cheese. The traditional games are looked after by FIGeST, the Italian federation of traditional games and sports.
The course is called the treppo, a stretch of road with ditches on each side, the grippi. And here is the rule people get wrong: you do not win by throwing the furthest. You win by covering the course in the fewest throws, a bit like golf on a country lane.
Five stretches, par 21. Each throw takes two taps: the first sets the angle as the arrow swings, the second sets the power as the bar rises and falls. It works with the space bar, the button or a tap on the screen. Hills slow the wheel and can roll it back, and stopping in a ditch costs a penalty throw. Fewer throws is better, so this is the one game in the room where a lower record wins.
