Fierljeppen

Fierljeppen: the Dutch sport of vaulting across a canal

What is fierljeppen?

Fierljeppen, "far leaping" in Frisian, comes from the flat, water-crossed land of Friesland in the Netherlands, where farmers once used long poles to jump over the ditches and canals between fields. Today it is a competitive sport. The jumper sprints along a jetty, grabs a pole planted in the middle of the canal, climbs it as it tips forward, and lets go at the top to land on a bed of sand on the far bank.

How the real sport works

The poles are between 8 and 13 metres long. What counts is the distance from the jetty to the landing mark in the sand, and the best jumpers in the world clear more than 22 metres. Fall in the water and the jump does not count.

How to play this version

Three jumps; your best one counts. One button does everything: tap to grab the pole, hold to climb, release to fly. Climbing higher sends you further, but it also slows the pole down, so a good grab is what lets you afford a full climb. Let go late for distance, but not too late. A dotted line at 22 metres marks elite level.
